Q: Hey thanks for your help about the skirt length. I guess it was only when it was windy and my skirt was blowing up that I felt was indecent as my shorts were visible. Uniform is comfortable for me but from your experiences is there anything else that could be more comfortable, eg substitutes for shorts or just anything generally that you have learnt about uniform over the years that you could pass down. Hey anon,

I totally get what you mean. I tend to wear bike shorts under my dress which come to about mid-thigh, so longer than boy shorts but can’t be seen below the hemline of the dress normally. If it’s windy and your skirt blows up but you’re wearing shorts, don’t worry about being indecent, it’s not! It’s very decent 🙂

That’s probably it, you’ll find you get used to wearing the uniform soon enough.

PS If anyone is reading this and thinking ‘oh no I don’t wear shorts under my dress!’ don’t worry, it’s just about what you feel comfortable with. Most girls prefer to wear shorts or something like it under their dresses because it feels more comfortable, but you don’t have to!

Q: In terms of dresses, how short is too short?

A: Hello anon,

If you look in your school planner, there should be a section on school uniform and how to wear it. Usually the shortest you can get away with is mid-thigh (that might be cutting it a bit too fine). To be honest, girls do have their dresses way higher than that and really, if your skirt is shorter than your blazer – i think we can deem it ‘too short’.

Q: Hey guys!!!! Thanks so much for answering all these questions for us the next gen! Just wanted to know what would you reckon is an appropriate dress/skirt length? From observation some girls wear it really short and others maybe below the knee, so what’s the “norm.” Is it ok to be a bit less conservative when we aren’t in the school environment, for example like the junior social or something? How much leg are we allowed to show and should we wear an extra layer like shorts underneath? ty! x

In terms of “proper” skirt length, the uniform guide at the front of the diary says just above the knee. Outside of the uniform though you should feel free to where you’re skirt at whatever length you feel comfortable in, whether that be longer or shorter. Wearing shorts is a good idea if you’re worried about the length being too short or the skirt flipping up (say in the wind or when sitting down), and can often make doing something more physical easier.

You could always hemm it up yourself, or, you could iron it so it’s shorter then put safety pins to keep it there.

Hey anon,

Hmmm, things about uniform I’ve learnt over the years … winter takes a bit longer to put on, so give it time. In the middle of winter when it’s really cold and you’re not going to take your jumper off all day, you can wear your pj top under your shirt- you’ll be extra warm and you can’t see it with the jumper on. Don’t undo your tie every night and do it again the morning, just loosen it. Check your uniform after not wearing it for half a year because you might have grown (and try not to do it the night before you have to wear it!). The last one is a bit weird, but I wear boy shorts on top of my tights in winter and this has been brilliant because then my tights don’t fall down!

That’s probably it, you’ll find you get used to wearing the uniform soon enough.

Q: This might seem like a stupid q but with winter uniform coming up just wanted to be prepared as it will be my first time! How do we wear our tights with the winter skirt? Are they worn up to the waist or? Never worn them before haha. Also I know in summer we have shorts underneath the dress so do we still need to wear them with the tights or are they unnecessary? Also

A: Don’t worry, it’s not a stupid question at all and I’m sure other year 9’s have been wondering the same thing. To answer your question, tights are worn with the waistband at the waist. Most Macrobbians tuck their shirts into their tights and then put their skirts on top. It’s up to you whether or not you wear shorts on top of your tights, but most girls do, especially if their tights are a little sheer.

Q: Step by step guide on wearing the winter uniform please ❤

A: Hey there 🙂

This is how I put on my winter uniform:

First I put on my white, stiff-collared shirt and button it up all the way to the top (because some teachers may tell you off otherwise).

Next I’ll pull on my tie and fold my collar over the top. I usually get my mum to tie it at the beginning of the week and just loosen it when taking it off so I don’t need someone to re-tie it for me every single day.

Then I’ll put on a pair of black ankle socks (just personal preference) and then my tights on top of that. If my tights are a little sheer I like to wear a pair of shorts over the top of them (but again, this is my personal preference).

Lastly I will put my skirt over the top and tuck my shirt into it before putting on my blazer and shoes. The jumper, beret and scarf are optional but are nice when you want an extra layer of warmth, especially while travelling to and from school.

If you are going to wear the pants, it’s pretty much the same steps except you would have to wear white socks instead of tights.

Don’t worry too much because the first two weeks of term will be a transition period where you can wear either your summer or winter uniform, so you have some time to get the hang of it. You’ll pick it up after a while just by looking at how the other students wear their uniform too. You can also find the uniform policy in the school planner. T-bar school shoes versus ballet flats

Girls at Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School are allowed to wear black t-bar or laceup shoes with their school uniform, but not other types, such as slip on ballet flats.

Winter socks at MacRob

Girls at Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School were once allowed to wear knee high black socks with their winter uniform. But due to girls mixing socks with tights, tights are now mandatory.

Q: any ideas why the black sock winter uniform rule changed last year?

we’re not one hundred percent sure but from what we’ve heard black socks are no longer accepted as winter uniform wear because apparently they look sloppy.

also, note that when black socks were still allowed, all students were meant to wear knee high socks but mac.rob has a history of nearly all students choosing to wear the ankle ones or the ones that just cover your heels – which by the way, are not acceptable.

if you decide to wear black socks, they must be knee-high. anything else is unacceptable even if it’s black.

another reason is that a lot of students have been wearing socks over stockings which is not cool according to the school.

i guess that’s why they changed the rule to stockings only.

Q: Is it alright to wear black ankle socks on top of the stockings?

A: Hey,

It’s not allowed for you to wear black socks over your stockings, and some teachers will make you take them off. However if you wear them under your stockings teachers don’t really seem to point it out.
